About the course

This one-year course prepares you for a career in the hairdressing industry. You will build your knowledge of the underlying principles and practical skills, and also study the everyday aspects of running a hairdressing business. Your skills will be developed through working in a real-life salon environment at The Retreat, with practical assessments on members of the public. You will also be expected to complete written assignments and online exams. The course allows you to show off your creativity and flair and includes colouring, cutting, shampooing, and conditioning, consultation, styling, and dressing hair. You will also study aspects of health and safety, reception, and customer service. All students also take part in hair competitions. You will need to purchase a uniform and a kit – these are required for all practical sessions and assessments.

– Shampoo and condition the hair and scalp
– Promote products and services
– Cut women’s hair
– Colour and lighten hair
– Perm and neutralise hair
– The art of dressing hair
– Create an image based on a theme within the hair and beauty sector
– Reception duties

Regis, KLF, Sweetcheeks, Rizzo’s

Careers and progression

Progressing to: Level 3 hairdressing, or jobs as junior stylist, receptionist, or self-employment.
Aspirational careers: Senior roles at hair and beauty wholesalers, or top hair brands such as Wella, L’Oreal, and Matrix. Salon owners, spa managers, salon manager and education.

Entry requirements

GCSEs grades 3 or above including English or maths

Additional information

Students will have opportunties to attend enrichment including trips, visits and talks from guest speakers. Students will be expected to work in the commerical salons and reception during salon days

All students will need to arrange and attend work experience – related to hairdressing.
