About Ben

Hi Ben! What can learners expect if they come to study in your department?

Students can expect passionate teachers, exciting relevant materials and to leave with an understanding of how to use maths in the real world.

tell us a little bit about yourself...

I was born and raised in Shrewsbury and I went to Belvidere School in Shrewsbury. Prior to working in Education, I worked for several years in retail and within Mental Health services supporting service users to find employment.

In my previous job, I worked closely with colleagues at Telford College and really wanted to be part of the team. My job now is exciting, challenging and rewarding.

What do you enjoy the most about your job?

I love being able to support and develop students to achieve their maths qualifications, then progressing into their dream jobs.

How do you and your team get the best out of students?

In the maths team, we have an unwavering belief that anyone can be good at maths. As long as a student wants to improve, we can help them to develop their confidence in maths and apply these skills to real world problems.

Tell us about specific parts of the courses which are particularly popular with current students, and why.

The most popular part and key part of all our maths courses is an understanding of financial literacy. We embed these so our students can learn about key financial topics whilst developing skills to achieve their GCSE or Functional Skills mathematics qualifications.

List a few of the main career progression opportunities.

Maths is key to all careers and by obtaining a Level 2 maths qualification, not only will it improve your employability but can earn you an additional £80,000 over your life time.

what do you do in your spare time?

In my spare time I enjoy: reading, playing chess and spending time with my family. I also have a black belt in Shaolin Kung Fu.
