About the course

Telford College has partnered with Teach A Trade to give engineers for the West Midlands and Shropshire the opportunity to up-skill to install and maintenance air source pumps.

This programme is designed to be delivered over 5 consecutive days so you can gain your air source heat pump qualification to enable a move towards a greener future. The integration of the a mental health qualification will help to combat the stresses of loan working.

This course will enable you to achieve LCL Awards: Level 3 award in the installation and maintenance of heat pump systems and Level 2 in understanding mental health first aid and mental health advocacy in the workplace.

During this course you will study the following topics and will be able to:

  • Know what a heat pump is, the principle of the vapour compression system and system components
  • Know the different operational characteristics of each type of heat pump unit and system arrangement
  • Know the fundamental principles of heat pump efficiency and design selection that are common for heat pumps
  • Know the fundamental principles of domestic hot water cylinder selection and system design that are common for heat pumps
  • Know the fundamental principles of hydraulic system design that are common for heat pumps
  • Know the fundamental principles of heat pump controls
  • Know how to plan and prepare for the installation of heat pumps
  • Know the requirements to install and test heat pump systems
  • Understand the requirements to commission heat pump system installations
  • Understand the requirements to handover heat pump system installations
  • Know the requirements for the handover of a heat pump installation
  • Know the requirements for routine service and maintenance of a heat pump system installation
  • Undertake fault diagnosis work on a heat pump system installation
  • Know the preparatory work required for the installation of an air source heat pump
  • Know the common requirements for the installation of an air source heat pump connected to hydraulic emitter circuits
  • Install heat pump units (non-refrigeration units).
  • Test and commission an air source heat pump system (non-refrigerant circuits)
  • Undertake the non-refrigerant circuit routine service and maintenance of an air source heat pump system (non-refrigerant circuits)
  • Explore mental health
  • Understand how to support individuals with mental ill health
  • Understand a mentally healthy environment

You will upon completion hold the qualification required to join the MSC to install and maintain air source heat pumps.

This course if funded for people who are currently employed and working in the industry.

You must have/meet one of the following to join the course:

  • N/SVQ level 2/3 in plumbing or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence;
  • N/SVQ level 2/3 in heating and ventilating (domestic installation) or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence;
  • N/SVQ level 2/3 in heating and ventilating (industrial and commercial Installation) or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence;
  • N/SVQ level 2/3 in oil-fired technical services or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence;
  • N/SVQ level 2/3 in gas installation and maintenance or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence;
  • Heating installers with minimum 3 years of experience installing wet central heating systems, evidenced either by manufacturer courses certification or gas safe register, OFTEC, MCS or HETAS registration.

In addition, if not included in the above current certification in relation to; WRAS water regulations/water byelaws or equivalent
