About the course

This basic certificate in construction has been designed to facilitate learners who wish to gain first steps into the construction sector, it incorporates basic levels of practical skills, knowledge and behaviours required to allow learners to understand some elements of preparation as to what is required to access the different trades.

 

This will be assessed and graded pass, merit or distinction and could lead to a higher-level course or help towards employment or apprenticeship.

Topics and units

  • Basic health and safety – Legislation, signage, PPE, and risks and hazards.
  • Carpentry skills – Bridle joints, fitting locks and latches.
  • Block paving – preparing sub- base and laying paviours.
  • Painting and decorating – wallpapering and painting surfaces.
  • Floor tiling and upstands – fixing and grouting of floor and wall tiles.
  • Introduction to construction, principles of construction and communication

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification, but a good understanding of maths and English would be desirable.

Age requirement 19+ years.

Additional information

Learners will need to provide PPE; such as steel toe capped boots, hi-vis vest and workwear trousers.

Course will be 35 weeks, on Tuesdays 6pm-9pm
