About the course

French A Level can unlock a world of opportunities. There are nearly 300 million French speakers worldwide; open the door to a world of travel, work and academic success through studying this subject. Whether you dream of exploring new cultures, pursuing a career in an international setting, or studying subjects like philosophy and literature, French is your key to success.

In this course you will develop strong communication skills in French, gaining fluency and confidence speaking, listening, reading, and writing, Immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of French-speaking countries, discovering their rich history and heritage. From literature to cinema, you’ll explore the fascinating world of French arts and humanities.

Topics and units

  • Social Issues and Trends which will cover: Aspects of French-speaking society – current trends and Aspects of French-speaking society: current issues.
  • Political and artistic culture which will cover: Artistic culture in the French-speaking world and Aspects of Political life in the French-speaking world.
  • French Grammar
  • French Works which will cover: Literary texts and films.
  • Individual Research Project for which students must identify a subject or a key question which is of interest to them and which relates to a country or countries where French is spoken.

Entry requirements

A minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English Language. You should also have a grade 5 or above in French.

Additional information

Three external assessments broken down into the following:

Listening, reading and writing assessment – a 2.5 hour exam worth 50% of A Level

Writing Assessment – a 2 hour exam work 20% of A Level

Speaking Assessment – a 21-23 minute oral exam worth 30% of A Level
