About the course

Introduction to 3D CAD using Autodesk Inventor is suitable for anyone who has never used 3D design software or wishes to move up from 2D Autocad.

Students will learn how to create well constrained sketch geometry, onto full 3D part creation, and then constrained 3D assemblies using those parts. Also covered will be the creation of engineering drawings from parts and assemblies.

This course introduces the basic concepts of ‘solid’ 3D modelling and would be a good pre-curser to a level 1 qualification.

Topics and units

Week 1 – Discussion of what a parametric modelling environment actually is. Setting up program preferences, creating 2-3 simple parts, a basic assembly and a drawing to provide a broad overview of the process.

Week 2 – Discussing the importance of well-defined sketches, the sketch constraint tools available and common error messages. Exercises to illustrate and re-enforce sketch creation.

Week 3 – Creating solid body parts from drawings. Introducing sketch planes, and ‘features’ such as fillets, chamfers, threads and hole patterns. Engineering drawing creation best practice.

Week 4 – Creating more complex parts. Using more advanced techniques such as lofts and sweeps

Week 5 – Producing 3D models from physical parts – lathe tools, holders and toolposts and creating an assembly and drawings.

Entry requirements

No previous experience needed, just an interest in CAD and a willingness to learn, as well as solid verbal and written communication skills.

Applicants should also be comfortable using a desktop computer.
