Introductory Welding Skills – Level 1

About the course

This course is designed for those that are novice welders and provides the opportunity to gain the knowledge and techniques typically found in industry using the MIG & TIG Welding processes. It is aimed at those seeking to upskill within their current employment and those who wish to learn welding for their own personal use. This course provides the foundations for applicants to progress onto a level 2 welding qualification if required.

Topics and units

MIG:

-use metal inert gas welding techniques safely to produce welded joints

-check joints are aligned and welds are sound and of uniform appearance

– identify defects in the weld using visual checks

-Be able to produce the following welded joint configurations:

1)   Welded Beads on plate in the PA (Flat) Position

2)   Lap Weld in the PB (Horizontal/Vertical) Position

3)   Tee-Fillet Weld in the PA (Flat) Position

4)   Corner Weld in the PA (Flat) Position

TIG:

– Use Tungsten inert gas welding techniques safely to produce welded joints

– check joints are aligned and welds are sound and of uniform appearance

– identify defects in the weld using visual checks.

-Be able to produce the following welded joint configurations:

1)   Welded Beads on plate in the PA (Flat) Position

2)   Lap Weld in the PB (Horizontal/Vertical) Position

3)   Tee-Fillet Weld in the PA (Flat) Position

4)   Corner Weld in the PA (Flat) Position

Complete course knowledge assessment consolidating knowledge acquired during the course

Entry requirements

No previous qualifications needed, just an interest in welding and a willingness to learn, as well as solid verbal and written communication skills.

 

Additional information

Applicants will require safety boots and suitable flame-retardant overalls or work clothing. Welding gloves and Welding Helmets are provided however, applicants can bring their own if they wish.

Course will run on Tuesday evenings, 6pm-9pm.
