Kickstart FAQs

The Kickstart Scheme provides funding to employers to create jobs for 16 to 24 year olds on Universal Credit.

The Kickstart scheme is specifically designed for those aged between 16 and 24, who are currently claiming Universal Credit, and may be at risk of long-term unemployment.

Apply to host any number of Kickstart placements directly. If your organisation wishes to apply to host Kickstart placements through an intermediary Gateway organisation, the government has published a full list of registered Gateways. The Gateway will act on your behalf and apply for a Kickstart Scheme grant for you.

 The scheme is technically open to anyone aged 16-24 who is claiming Universal Credit, regardless of their education level. So yes, university graduates who fall in that age bracket and are out of work may be eligible for the scheme.

The scheme will allow students to be eligible for the Government kickstart programme for 16-24 year olds as-well as those on universal credit, so that students are able to get jobs with guaranteed hours and not lose out on income due to zero hour contracts. Many students across the UK have lost employment due to the COVID-19 Crisis.
