Recruiting an apprentice is an absolute no brainer…
Paul Conner is a director of Telford-based business Crown Recycling, a civil engineering and drainage company based in Halesfield.
A young, fast-growing business, Crown Recycling is working with key partners, such as UK Highways, Skanska, Wrexham County Council, Gwynedd County Council and the M6 Toll and is set to land further significant contracts.
Paul’s experience came from working in Asset Management before partnering with co-director Gary and starting Crown Recycling in 2015.
With an innovative approach and a wealth of industry experience, Paul and Gary decided to introduce their first apprentice to the company last year. They wanted to create a young, dynamic workforce who were prepared to grow and progress along with their business and felt that hiring from within the industry could often come with its own pitfalls.
Paul said: “Recruiting an apprentice is an absolute no-brainer. It’s important to recruit a team who can adapt to Crown’s continued development.”
Paul and Gary take pride in supporting the local community and contacted Telford College to assist their search for an apprentice. Telford College provided support throughout the process of recruitment, helping Crown Recycling to advertise the vacancy, interview candidates and select the most appropriate fit for the business.
Maison Jobson became Crown Recycling’s first apprentice, and is now thriving in his role thanks to Crown’s support and his training at Telford College. Nineteen-year-old Maison, a former Burton Borough student, has now completed his Level 3 IT Application Specialist qualification and thanks to his hard work and dedication Crown have given him access to the latest in industry IT training, including 3D CAD and BIM.
Maison’s day-to-day role includes CAD engineering, where he creates technical drawings following site surveys critical to even Crown’s biggest projects. One such project Maison has been a part of is Crown’s huge drainage survey of a large stretch of the M1, in which Maison produced key technical drawings.
Maison said: “My apprenticeship has given me work experience that employers really value, in addition to my qualification. I’d say ‘go for it’ to anyone considering following this path. I’ve learned a lot about myself and the industry, and I’d like to progress even further with the company as it grows.”
The future for Crown Recycling looks bright, and their apprenticeship journey is not over yet. Paul is already looking to recruit a second apprentice, this time focusing on business administration and said: “We want to invest in our apprentices. We truly see them as part of the company’s long-term future.”
