Amelia sets sail on her Royal Navy career

Published: November 2, 2016

Telford teenager Amelia Lloyd is following a family military tradition by joining the Royal Navy.

The 18-year-old, from St Georges, is completing basic training at HMS Raleigh in Cornwall after graduating from a BTEC level three Public Uniformed Services course at Telford College of Arts and Technology.

Amelia combined her TCAT studies with a part-time job at the International Centre in Telford as a catering assistant, to help earn some money before her naval training brgan.

The former Sutherland Academy student, who passed the Royal Navy’s initial selection test at the end of last year, said: “My ambition was to join the navy as a warfare seaman specialist.

“I chose the Public Uniform Services course at TCAT as there is a military background in my family.”

Asked what the TCAT course had taught her, Amelia said: “It has developed my understanding of discipline, being on parade, and time awareness. TCAT has a good, friendly environment, and the teaching staff are pretty sound!”

Tutor Craig Stockman said: “Amelia fully engaged in her learning and worked hard within her core programme, particularly within the aspect of the physical training.

“She regularly volunteered to attend extra physical training sessions to fully prepare herself for her physical selection tests – which she passed successfully.

“Amelia worked hard and fully prepared herself to successfully achieve her career ambition of joining the Royal Navy – we wish her the greatest of success.”

Public Uniformed Services at TCAT are designed to prepare students for careers in the Army, Navy, RAF, and police or fire services.

TCAT is opening its doors for a special information event on November 23, from 4.30pm to 7.30pm, to explain more about its full time, part time, and university-level courses.

There is also a ‘twilight taster’ session for careers in Public Uniformed Services at TCAT on December 1 – a chance to experience the courses before applying, and find out more about their content from college lecturers.
