Toni’s story inspires art and design students

A former Telford College arts student has returned to share her journey through university, into a successful graphic design career.

Antonia Hind, known as Toni, enrolled on a level three extended diploma course in art and design at the college in 2015, and has kept in close contact with her tutors ever since.

They invited her back to the campus, before the current restrictions were introduced, to give level three students an insight into her time at university, and the start of her career.

Antonia graduated from Coventry University with a first class honours degree in graphic design, and set up her own freelancing business,

She is now based in Chester, working for Creative Play, an outdoor playground equipment company.

Toni said: “I remember when I was at school we had former students come in and talk to us about university; now I’m happy to have been able to come back to college and tell my own story.

“I feel it’s my responsibility, my duty, to give as much advice to these students as I can, so they can make informed decisions about their own careers.”

She added: “I told the students what they don’t get told, including how much work you need to prepare before starting university, and what it’s really like leaving home and living in halls.

“I explained the best thing these students can do is to take part in the live briefs and competitions that Telford College arranges.

“I’m still very much in contact with The Wrekin Arts Society who funded my professional portfolio, and have helped set up my website as a result of what I did at college.”

Two of the Telford College students who attended Toni’s question and answer seminar were Jenna Lovegrove-Chimma and Tom Edwards.

Jenna said: “I was considering university. I wasn’t thinking about graphics, but now I am, Toni explained the course and she’s really inspired me.”

Tom added: “I learned I need to keep working on my portfolio before I go to university. I’ve got a few open events planned in, and Toni’s journey is inspiring.”

Art, design & media courses are delivered in the college’s Creative Hub, which equips students for careers in interactive media, publishing, fashion, music, stage and set design, textiles, jewellery and crafts, art and design as well as museums, venues and galleries.

Telford College art and design teacher Anna Dowdall was Toni’s tutor. She said: “Toni used the college as her work experience for a module whilst on her degree where she needed an industry placement where she very quickly became a valued part of the team.”
