A golden footballing opportunity for former HLC pair

Published: November 29, 2016

Former HLC students Ryan Fitchett and Connor Tromans are developing their footballing skills as part of a pioneering partnership between TCAT and Wolverhampton Wanderers FC.

The pair said they had been ‘blown away’ by the facilities and opportunities on the BTEC Diploma in Sport Performance and Excellence programme.

The programme, based at TCAT’s Wellington campus, is jointly taught by tutors from TCAT and the community trust team from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Ryan, who has been learning how to improve his sports and fitness abilities, said: “TCAT are really pushing me on and off the pitch. I’ve been blown away by the anatomy and physiology studies – I love learning about the body.

“I like TCAT, I really like the course, and the tutors are cool – though sometimes strict.

“The Wolves Community Trust team are proper professional footballers. TCAT is a proper good college . . . trust me.”

Connor added: “We have also been learning how to lead our own sessions which links to learning how to be a sports coach. You also learn how to organise, manage and prepare a team ready for matches.

“You can come onto this course with any sport preference; it doesn’t have to be football, because the principle of getting a team ready is the same for any coach.”

Jack Bowser from Wolverhampton Wanderers Community Trust said: “These HLC lads have been ambassadors for their school, and at TCAT they are thriving.

“The whole group are doing really well but it’s worth a special mention to Ryan, Connor and the rest of the HLC ex-students who have really matured since September.

“They are getting motivation from doing well in the classroom and playing well in the weekly fixtures.”

Connor and Ryan said HLC was a good school and the teachers were ‘great’.

They added: “We send our best wishes to all year 10s and 11s with their GCSE exams. You need to work hard to get onto the Sport performance and Excellence at TCAT.”
