Leisure industry role for sports student Ruby

A Telford College sports student has secured a leisure supervisor’s role at a local hotel – and thanked tutors for putting her ‘on the right path’ to achieve her career dreams.

Ruby Weston has been working at Telford Golf & Spa Hotel for three years alongside her college studies, spending two years as a waitress and a third year with the leisure team.

She completed the level one and two sport course at Telford College, and will now be combining her new leisure supervisor role at the hotel with a level three NVQ in leisure management.

“I approached the leisure manager initially for work experience and ended up switching from the waitress staff to the leisure staff,” said Ruby, a former Madeley Academy student, from Sutton Hill.

“My job links to the course through a lot of routes – fitness, nutrition, exercise programmes and gym inductions. It has helped me apply what I’ve learnt to real life situations.

“I have really enjoyed meeting new people on my course. None of my friends from school were interested in sport, so being surrounded by like-minded people who all enjoy the same things was brilliant.”

She added: “Having a course that specialised in sport was a big selling point for the college. We also learn quite a lot about the sports industry and the many career path options there are.

“I’d recommend this course to anyone who enjoys sport. It shows you how you can succeed in the industry without the need to be a famous sports player.

“Sports staff at Telford College are the best. They’re all about having fun while you’re learning, so no two lessons are the same. They’re also caring and supportive and are always available to talk if you need them.

“I really like the freedom and independence we are given at college. We are all treated like adults, and there is no strict policy on uniform so we are able to express ourselves easier.

“My career goal is to become a leisure manager on either a cruise ship or in Dubai. Telford College has put me on the right path to achieve this.”

The college’s head of area Ashley Bowler said: “Ruby has worked incredibly hard since joining us on level two and progressing on to level three.

“She has applied herself in all aspects of her study programme, especially her achievements with maths and English.

“We are extremely proud of Ruby and her progression into a successful career in the sport and leisure industry. She is an excellent example to all our students of what can be achieved with hard work and dedication.”

He added: “Ruby’s journey is another example of the excellent teaching and learning here at the college, along with the experiences we provide for our students; giving them the opportunities to develop their skills and knowledge to become great assets to the sport and leisure industry.”
