Mature student Marie is styling a whole new careerPublished: November 22, 2016
It’s never too late to change careers . . . just ask mature student Marie McGilchrist, from Donnington in Telford.
After spending years in retail management and working with supermarket chain Aldi, she wanted a different job where she could be her own boss, and choose her working hours.
So she signed up on a Level two Fast Track Hairdressing apprenticeship through Telford College of Arts and Technology, allowing her to earn and learn at the same time.
Marie, 43, a former pupil of the Grove School in Market Drayton, said: “I have got grown-up children now, and wanted to change my career path. I have always had an interest in hairdressing, so when this opportunity came me way, I took it.
“The girls in the salon where I work, BU Hair & Beauty in Wellington, also studied at TCAT and recommended it to me, so everything fell into place.”
She added: “I wanted a new career which would challenge me, but also one which meant I could be my own boss and choose my own hours – whether in a salon or as a mobile stylist.
“I chose TCAT purely because of the lecturers, Nicki Longden and Kerrie Treharne, who were recommended to me. The practical and tutorial sessions in the college have been fantastic and have built my confidence.”
Marie said: “I would definitely recommend apprenticeships to everyone, and TCAT as a college. You get hands-on experience whilst gaining qualifications, and a salary in the industry where you will be working in the future.”
Course tutor Kerrie Treharne said: “Marie has shown what hard work gets you. She has always had 100 per cent commitment to the course and to her employer. Marie came into hairdressing a little later in life, but has not let this hold her back one little bit.”
TCAT has a series of ‘twilight tasters’ over the coming weeks, including a session on November 29 from 4.30pm to 6pm to try out part of a hair and beauty course, and meet members of the team.
