Thanks to the Pre-Employment team here at Telford College, 32-year-old Jonathan Connelly has embarked on a new career as a Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) driver.
Jonathan, from Wolverhampton, had previously completed a fork lift truck training programme and secured a job with a supply chain company.
However, when he decided that the work wasn’t for him, he came back to college to complete an HGV Class 2/Category C driver training course.
Just days after completing the programme, he had begun a brand new HGV career with West Bromwich-based road haulage firm Transervice, which runs pallet distribution and warehousing services throughout the UK.
He said: “I found out about this programme through my Jobcentre and I’m delighted that I signed up. I would definitely recommend it. I found the course very insightful and the instructors are absolutely brilliant. It gave me everything I needed to know to get my new career going, and within two or three weeks of finishing it, I had got myself a full time job.”
Jonathan is now hoping to step up his qualifications even further over the coming months by studying for his Class 1 certificate.
Tutor Martin French said: “Jonathan had a great attitude towards the programme. In class he worked very hard, as a result passed all elements of his training. He also completed a Certificate of Professional Competence.”
Jonathan’s HGV programme was delivered in West Bromwich – one of a series of pre-employment training courses led by Telford College around the Midlands.
The courses, which are a combination of classroom tuition and practical training, are held as close as possible to the learner’s Jobcentre.
Telford College has years of experience working in partnership with Jobcentre Plus and employers, generating new opportunities for the unemployed to gain skills in a variety of vocational areas.
