Retirement is on the menu for long-serving Yvonne

Telford College has said goodbye to one of its longest serving members of staff, who has retired after nearly 40 years.

Yvonne Corbett joined the college towards the end of 1977, when she returned to work after having her two children to help open the kitchens at its former Oakengates campus.

She remained there for around three years, before relocating to the Wellington site at Haybridge Road – where she then remained for more than three and a half decades.

“I’ve really enjoyed it. I’ve outlasted more members of staff than I can remember,” said Yvonne, from Oakengates, who says she now plans to ‘have a rest’ and spend time with her husband John.

“The thing I enjoyed the most was meeting so many different people, and students. It helped to keep the brain active.”

Members of the Aramark catering team at Telford College were joined by principal Graham Guest to hold a retirement presentation for Yvonne, on her final day.

“There aren’t many jobs I haven’t done in the kitchens during my time – cooking, washing up, serving, and operating the tills,” she said. “I’ve enjoyed it, but it’s fair to say things have changed greatly since my early days.”

Graham Guest said: “On behalf of everyone at Telford College, I want to thank Yvonne for so many years of dedicated service and incredible commitment.

“She has shown loyalty, determination, patience and good humour throughout her time with us, and we wish her a long, happy and well-earned retirement.”
