TCAT helps to ‘Energize’ the community sports awardsPublished: November 16, 2016
Telford College of Arts and Technology sponsored the ‘Sports Performance of the Year’ prize at this year’s Energize community sports awards.
Sally Western represented the college at the event, held at Telford’s International Centre, where British ski jump legend Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards was the guest speaker.
A short list of the 10 best sports performances of 2016 by Shropshire-based stars was drawn up by a panel, and a vote was then held for the champion, through the Shropshire Star website.
The winner was Nick Beighton, the former Army captain from Shrewsbury who lost both legs in Afghanistan and went on to win a bronze medal in the canoeing at the Rio Paralympic Games.
The two runners-up were Claire Martin, and John Walker.
Claire was the women’s winner in the Sexarathon Series, Telford Athletic Club’s series of races ranging from five kilometres to five miles, for the incredible 11th time, while record-breaking Newport-based Archer won two gold medals at the Rio Paralympic Games . . . having only been inspired to take up the sport by watching London 2012.
