Telford College of Arts and Technology held a reception to say goodbye to three long-serving governors, and to thank them for their years of dedicated service.
Rick Tyrer, who has chaired the college’s governing corporation since 2015 and been a governor for 14 years, steps down at the end of his term on December 31.
Also reaching the end of their terms are Mike Lowe, a former chairman who has been a TCAT governor for over 40 years, and Mike Baldwin, who has been one of three staff governors on the board.
A reception was held at TCAT’s Wellington campus to recognise and thank all three of the men for their contribution to the corporation, and the development of the college.
Paul Hinkins, who joined the corporation in 2013 and has been serving as vice chairman, will be replacing Mr Tyrer as chairman from the start of January.
Mr Hinkins said: “I wish to extend our thanks and appreciation to them all for their service. Both Mike Lowe and Rick Tyrer have held the position of chairman, and their wisdom, knowledge, dedication and sheer hard work to the college has been outstanding.
“Our corporation, college and learners have benefited from their leadership, which has been inspiring to all.”
Mr Lowe and Mr Tyrer were each presented with a commemorative engraved silver plate, acknowledging their many years of service.
Mike Lowe first joined the TCAT governors back in 1976, and was chairman for 13 years, from 1998 to 2011. In the 2001 New Year Honours List he was awarded a CBE for his Services to Education Training and Business Support.
Rick Tyrer has been a governor since 2002, and worked tirelessly to support the college during a period of great change. He was formerly part of Telford Development Corporation, which helped to build the town in the 1960s and 1970s.
Mike Baldwin, who has a background in the poultry industry, joined TCAT in 2007 and has spent much of his time delivering and developing part of the college’s provision of the Apprenticeship Framework to local businesses.
The TCAT corporation has 22 governors, made up of 15 independent people, plus the Principal, three staff members and three student representatives.
