Work placement leads to job offer for hospitality student Oliver
Hospitality student Oliver Rice has been taken on by the owners of Telford’s International
Centre after impressing the team during a work placement.
Oliver, from Brookside, is on a level one chef catering course at Telford College of Arts and Technology, and completed a 36-hour work placement with Southwater Event Group as part of his studies.
The placement included work with the front-of-house teams at the Ramada and the Holiday Inn hotels in the town centre.
Joanne Bourne, workplace co-ordinator at TCAT, said: “Oliver loves working front of house, and really took to the position.
“As a result, he was offered part-time work with the Southwater Event Group, and is now looking forward to a career in the hospitality industry. It’s great that TCAT has been able to open this door for him.”
She added: “Oliver has been very polite and responsive to all that has been asked of him. He is a very positive and bright student with a great attitude to progressing on his journey into the hospitality industry.
Jonathan Bremer, food and beverage supervisor at the Holiday Inn, said: “Whilst working with me, Oliver did the breakfast shift on a Monday morning.
“He was involved in many aspects of this shift, including meeting and greeting guests, offering hot beverages, clearing and relaying tables, taking orders, end of shift cleaning, and polishing.
“All of these he has embraced with a positive and can-do attitude – and a big smile. Oliver has been a pleasure to work with. His enthusiasm and willingness to engage and learn, alongside his positive attitude has been highly refreshing.
“This was epitomised during his first shift with me when one of our regular guests pulled me to one side on his way out of breakfast to highlight how impressed he had been by Oliver.
“He has demonstrated a keen sense of initiative and a firm understanding of the importance of working as part of a team – that will serve him well moving forward.
“I am extremely happy to hear he has been offered a position within the company. This I feel speaks wonders for the work placement programme that he was a part of.”
Joe Franklin, from the Southwater Event Group human resources team, added: “We recognise the importance of offering a quality, tailor-made work experience for all students who join us, whether that is on a short term week’s placement or a longer term basis over several months.
“It’s important that through the creation of a positive learning opportunity we help students to take their first steps towards a career within the events and hospitality industry, and we’re delighted to be able to do just that for Oliver, after such a successful placement in two of our group hotels.”
