Access to Higher Education (Health Professionals) Level 3

Access to HE Diplomas are designed to support students in reaching their full potential and accessing university courses.

Access to HE (Health Professionals) is specifically aimed at those wanting to pursue clinical careers in the NHS. Students really value the knowledge, experience and assessments within the Access to HE Diploma and feel it prepares them well for the next steps at university.

Subjects studied on the Access to HE (Health Professionals) Diploma include;
- Health Studies
- Biology
- Psychology
- Sociology
- Academic Studies

As the course is focused on supporting students in progressing to university, a key aspect of the course is the development of academic skills, in writing, reading, presenting and researching. Therefore, time is allocated to the development of these skills.

Students will be supported in completing their UCAS applications within the first term of study, so we do recommend students consider the university options prior to enrolling on the Access to HE course.

Career Prospects

The qualification support students in accessing a wide range of univeristy courses, although the large majority of students opting for this route progress into clinical NHS roles and studying one of the following at university;
- Nursing (adult, child, mental health, diability)
- Midwifery
- Paramedic Science
- Operating Department Practitioner
- Speech and Language Therapy

Entry Requirements

Access to HE courses are designed to support adult learners who have been out of full time education for at least 1 year or who are pursuing a change in career.

Students should have ideally already achieved a grade C/4 at GCSE or level 2 Functional Skill in Maths and English.

There may be opportunity to study one GCSE or Functional Skills qualification alongside the Access to HE course, should be assessed at working towards level 2 in this subject.

Units are achieved throughout the year through the completion of a range of different assessments. These might include (but not limited to);
- Essays
- Reports
- Presentations
- Academic Posters
- Tests
- Verbal assessments

It is really important that a range of assessment methods are used in order to prepare students for univeristy and the variety of assessment methods they will experience.

After the course

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be awarded level 3 credits at either pass, merit or distinction. There are 45 graded credits available, which carry UCAS points.

Each university will advertise their entry requirements and outline the number of credits they are expecting prospective student to achieve at each grade.
