A level student Favour Ochonma is lining up an exciting career in software engineering after her studies in mathematics, computing and physics.
Favour originally moved to Telford from Nigeria in 2023 and began working towards her English and maths GCSEs, alongside a business vocational course, until tutors discovered Favour’s untapped potential.
“I was invited to trial some A level work to test my abilities and, after doing really well, they offered me a place on the programme” says Favour.
“I chose to study subjects that could lead me into a career in engineering or computer science. I like the functional side to my A levels, as I’d rather do practical work that helps me understand what I’m learning compared to reading. It’s what I like about physics, we do a lot of experiments, and it links to mathematics nicely.
“I really enjoy mathematics as I feel it comes naturally to me, the teachers here have supported me well and want to push my abilities, including learning new computer programming languages to test my knowledge. The students and staff are so friendly and helpful, I really enjoy learning in all of my lessons.”
Favour attended a prestigious maths training programme at Cambridge University, celebrating ‘Women in Mathematics’ – find out more.
“I enjoyed going to Cambridge, I got to experience life at a top university and study at my own pace. The lectures were run by current students, and we got to find out about their experiences as well as discovering higher level mathematics. When I’ve completed my studies, I’d like to work my way up to being a software engineer.”
Favour was also chosen to speak to BBC Radio Shropshire when they hosted their mid-morning show in the College’s Wellington Campus – Listen here
“Favour is an exceptional student,” says Robert Bennion, learner manager for sixth form at Telford College. “Originally, Favour joined us in the A level programme late, after she was enrolled for GCSE mathematics, where her remarkable ability was quickly recognised by her teachers.
“She worked hard to catch up, and she clearly has a passion for her individual subjects, as well as learning in general. Her teachers constantly comment on her passion, work ethic, and ability to motivate herself, and this is a clear example of this.”
