Following the first year of Telford College’s groundbreaking games design course, current student Aidan Matthews discussed what he’s learnt so far.
The two-year course allows students to develop fundamental skills in the sector, as well as exploring personal progression routes in the games design industry.
Learners can discover how to design characters and levels, story writing, video editing, 3D modelling, coding and much more, using industry-standard specialist software and technology.
Previously a student at William Brookes School, Aidan first discovered the course after being shown an article by a family member. He said: “I saw that there was a new games design course with 3D modelling elements, two areas I’m extremely interested in, and decided it was the best course for my future.
“At the moment, our class are creating weapons for the game Fortnite; I’m using a Viking theme to create my own axe. We’ve also designed characters and created in-game assets; I’ve made a menu board and a noticeboard while other classmates have designed desks, tables and lots more.
“Overall, I find the atmosphere really relaxed and we can get on with our work at our own pace. I’ve really enjoyed every session so far. The college is very accessible for me, I’ve had a pleasant experience with everyone in and out of my sessions and I feel very safe here.”
When Aidan completes his studies, he wants to continue working with 3D modelling. “I’ll either continue studying at university level or go straight into the market, either in a role at a design company or freelance.”
Johnathan Abbott, learner manager for creative and music at Telford College, said: “Having introduced the level three games design course this year, it has been an incredibly exciting and revolutionary addition to our curriculum.
“Since the outset I have been overwhelmed with what the students have been able to produce, with regards to both their technical and creative skills, led by lecturers who are industry-based professionals.
“We are already in the process of forging links with regional companies and Higher Education providers that are feeding directly into the course, offering essential opportunities for student achievement and progression.”
