Jake Taylor is a 2nd year level 3 student, studying catering at Telford College, we spoke to him about his studies and endeavours outside of college.

Previously from Telford Priory School, Jake originally chose Telford College after being sold on the catering course and the facilities available for students to use. He is also studying for his driving theory lessons alongside his course.

“Catering was something I always wanted to do. If I’d have pushed myself to do another subject, I’d have hit a dead end and found it boring. I like that in catering there is always something new to learn and make.”

“The interview to join the college was really easy and I was able to take in information, what I was going to be studying and what was expected of me.

“I love all the work we do on our course, I like the theory side of catering, it can be fun, as I can get my head down and process what I need to learn.

“I love the variety of activities at Telford College to do, there’s extra-curricular activities and spaces to go and study, I use the student hub regularly.

Jake works at the Red House in Lilleshall, where he is currently a kitchen porter, but he is in the process being trained to serve food and work on the line. “It’s going really well, I’ve been there about nine months so far”.

“I love making any desserts, I’d love to work in, or just have my own bakery – just any type of dessert!”

Robert Lee, Catering Lecturer, said “Having external work experience is really vital for our students, they get to apply the skills they’ve learnt here and apply them in a real workplace. Other restaurants have completely different menus, students get the opportunity to adapt and learn new skills they can apply to their studies.”

“The students are very lucky with the kit we have here. it’s similar to what you have at top restaurants, maybe even better than some, it prepares them for the industry a lot better.”
