Apprenticeships are real jobs – with plenty of hands on experience, a salary and chance to gain a recognised qualification alongside a robust programme of study with further opportunities to move into higher level programmes following completion at level 3.
An Early Years Educator (EYE) works as part of a professional team in a range of settings, ensuring the welfare and care of children from 0-5yrs is of high quality. EYEs will supervise any volunteers or Early Years Practitioners (EYP). EYE’s work and interact directly with children on a day-to-day basis. They develop positive relationships, lead the assessment and planning of appropriate activities and experiences, ensuring that all individual needs are supported to enable to children to grow and develop.
The EYE programme is 18 months of learning, including a L3 EYE qualification and supported by an industry trained assessor and teacher. You will gain knowledge, skills and behaviours both in the workplace and “off the job”. The statutory requirement to complete “off the job” hours is fulfilled in college one day a week. Every 10 weeks, your assessor will review your progress and set targets with you and your workplace mentor. Upon completion of the qualification and apprenticeship programme, evidence is collated, and a portfolio is moved to the “Gateway”, which, if accepted, moves to the End Point Assessment stage (EPA).
The EPA is made up of a 90 minute Professional Discussion to confirm the competencies of the apprentice across the knowledge, skills and behaviours linked to this programme, followed by a multiple choice exam of 35 questions. Both assessments are graded as a Fail, Pass or Distinction.

Many apprentices remain employed within their workplace as a L3 EYE, in nurseries, pre schools, reception classes, health/social care. EYEs will also have the opportunity to be room leaders, Special Education Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO), Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) as well as other pathways with extra responsibilities.
Opportunities to study at a higher level (Level 4, Level 5 and Level 6) are also available upon completion of the programme.
Entry requirements
Ideally a minimum of 4 GCSEs at grades 4 or higher (GCSE C or above) including English and Maths, however a L2 Functional Skills in English and/or Maths could run alongside the apprenticeship.
Successful completion of a pre-assessment in college
Be able to work approximately 30 hours per week.
Additional information
We partner with different organisations to enhance an apprentice’s journey, including working with the NSPCC, creative arts and drama organisations, local forest schools and many more.
Telford College works with the employer to create a specific training plan to meet the apprenticeship standards. An assessor, teacher and workplace mentor will support the apprentice to fulfil the training plan.
The apprentice will evidence their knowledge, skills and practical experience gained through assignment work, creative displays/products and professional discussions. This evidence will be mapped to the apprenticeship standards and reviewed weekly, as well as part of ten-week reviews.
