Hundreds of students and staff from Telford College took part in the annual remembrance parade and commemoration today, to honour the service and sacrifice of all those that have defended our freedoms.

The parade was led by the college’s public uniformed services students, and included representatives from the British Army reserves, Royal Navy, and Shropshire Fire & Rescue Service.

The king’s representative in Shropshire, Lord Lieutenant Anna Turner, was also present, and addressed the students.

She said: “During the two minutes’ silence, I can’t help but think of my own family – what it would have been like for me, and compare it to those families of old.

“I think of what it would have been like as a 21-year-old, being told that your husband was going to war, when possibly the only thing they hear is a message coming back saying ‘missing, presumed dead’.

“What must it have been like for those families, torn apart by their loved ones disappearing to war?

“It’s very important we remember them.

“We thank them for keeping our freedom – and you here today are making sure that future generations do that.

“We will remember them, and thank them for their ultimate sacrifice.”

Mel Newbrook, the college’s learner manager for sport and public uniformed services, opened and closed the ceremony, and Telford College tutor Stuart Gregory played The Last Post, and Reveille.

A two-minute silence was observed across the college to show respect for those who lost their lives during the war – giving their tomorrows for our todays.
