Automotive student Joshua Worrall is excited to begin his career in the automotive industry, upon completion of his course.
Previously a pupil at Ercall Wood Academy, Josh decided to study at Telford College after seeing the college’s social media posts promoting courses.
“I studied electrical installation at first” says Josh. “I really enjoyed putting things together, finding out how they work, however I decided to change my career focus and I chose to study automotive.
“I find there’s a lot of crossovers between electrical and automotive. There are similar processes to testing, wiring and electrical elements, I found that I carried the skills I’d learnt previously over easily.
“We learn so much in our workshop sessions, from tyres and engines to gearboxes and electric systems. I enjoy finding out how the sensor systems work in modern cars, how they all work together and how they affect how the whole car runs.
“I love getting up close and personal with the cars, seeing how each component or system works and how they contribute to the finished product. I really enjoy the amount of practical work we get to do in the workshop and the balance with our theory sessions.”
“Telford College is very local for me, and I was impressed with how much choice they had to offer. Signing up for a course was so easy and straightforward and I know if I didn’t like a subject and I wanted to change, the college would easily support that.
“I also feel well supported by the staff here, whenever we’re facing our exams, they do their best to help prepare us.”
When Josh finishes his course, he’s looking to carry on his practical work in a local garage, where he can apply his knowledge to help the community.
Josh adds: “I’d say to anybody who wants to get into automotive to focus on their maths, as there’s a lot of calculations we must do to complete our tasks. Also, try and get familiar with any parts of the car beforehand, as it will help with your understanding when you come to your practical work.”
Telford College invested £3.5 million into their cutting-edge Automotive Centre, including three specialist workshops where students gain hands-on experience in an environment which mirrors the workplace, aided by strong links with local dealerships and garages.
Robert Hands, automotive lecturer at Telford College, said: “Josh is an incredibly knowledgeable student, he absorbs any information you give him like a sponge. He then takes this theory into the workshop and carries out all his tasks to the highest standard.”
“Automotive is a fantastic occupation to get into. With all the newer electric vehicles coming onto the market, there will always be a demand to help maintain them, as well as replacing the outgoing automotive workforce.”
