Introduction to Basic Home Maintenance – Part time

About the course

This programme is designed for anyone who are interested in home DIY, whether they are beginners or those who have little experience with it. The practical skills on this programme provide an excellent opportunity to gain the practical abilities required to perform some basic home DIY, as well as providing a taster of a range of trades, which can lead to further learning in a specific trade field.

Running from 4th June 2024, this FREE* programme runs for 5 consecutive Tuesday evenings between 18:00 and 21:00.

Topics and units

The programme runs 3 hours per week for 5 weeks and will cover the following topics:

All weeks will address the fundamental health and safety aspects for each skill and practice you should be aware of.

Weeks 1 & 2 – Painting and decorating skills will help you strengthen your practical abilities and demonstrate your ability to complete everyday tasks around the house. You will learn jobs like as applying wallpaper across angles and painting walls, which will allow you to practise your decorative cutting abilities.

Week 3 – Basic plumbing abilities, including how to replace washers and stop leaking taps. Tightening connections under the washbasin, changing and inspecting P-Trap/waste pipes for new ones to prevent blockages.

Week 4 – Tiling skills will teach you how to fix tiles to floors and splash backs.

Week 5 – Fixing lathes and locks allowing you to perform a wide range of jobs around the house and garden, from installing new locks to repairing gate lathes.

Entry requirements

No previous qualifications needed, just an interest in DIY and home improvements, as well as a willingness to learn, as well as solid verbal and written communication skills.

Additional information

You may then wish to enrol on further DIY and home improvement programmes to develop your technique.
