Health T-Level students prepare for placements

T-Level students practice midwifery

We caught up with Summer Owen-Jones and Joel Sanjeev to talk about their brand-new T-Level courses, signalling the start to a brand-new era at Telford College.

Firstly Summer, a student who has recently joined us from Abraham Darby Academy, is one of the college’s first students to take the college’s health T-Level course.

“I picked T-Levels because I believe I work better in a hands-on environment and this course offers me a 9-week placement in a hospital, in my chosen pathway: adult nursing.

“So far, we’ve learnt about how to treat patients, including diversity and equality, and how to respect a patient. I’m really looking forward to going on placement and applying what we’ve learnt so far with patients on a real-life ward.

“On my course, I feel our lecturers really treat us like adults here and I feel more engaged to learn”

After studying in and emigrating from India, Joel Sanjeev came to Telford and was drawn to the practical side of the college’s T-Level course.

“I chose T-Levels because they were more suited to Adult Nursing. Unlike level 3 health and social care, T-Levels has more practical work, so we get more used to the nursing environment.”

“In the first four weeks, we have learnt about the legislative side of health, science and nutrition including proteins and carbohydrates, as well as cell theory. Whilst studying my course, I’m really enjoying getting to know other students and lecturers.”

Joel and Summer will both be working real shifts in either Shrewsbury or Telford hospital, as part of a 9-week placement programme over the next two years of their course, experiencing all areas of their chosen pathways, with full support given in the classroom to help boost their knowledge and confidence in a real life scenario.

Other students who’ve chosen other pathways have similar experience. Those who’ve taken the midwifery pathway will get the opportunity to work in all areas of the maternity ward, as well as those studying on the mental health nurse pathway, who will have placements in the Redwoods Centre in Shrewsbury.
