Hundreds of students visit college for ‘familiarisation day’

Telford College welcomed more than 300 students from the town’s Learning Community Trust onto campus to find out more about the further education courses and facilities on their doorstep.

Students from Hadley Learning Community and Ercall Wood Academy were given a taste of the A level courses and university-standard facilities on offer at the Haybridge campus during the familiarisation day.

Each student was asked to choose their preferred subjects before arrival, so the college could tailor-make a programme to meet each person’s interests.

Holly Davies, head of Telford College’s 7th Form, said: “We wanted to create a hands-on experience for the students, giving them a flavour of college life.

“Some students joined our sports team in the college’s indoor dome, others went to the Creative Hub to find out more about the arts, into our music studios, or our hair and beauty salon, The Retreat. We had tasters across all of our A level subjects.

“It is important to give year 10 students an opportunity to visit the campus, so they can make an informed choice when it comes to applying for college next year.

“We provided taster experiences for all subjects, within Covid regulations, and ensured all students had a taster of their preferred subject.”

She added: “We have an ongoing relationship with the Learning Community Trust and it was important to offer the taster day because we have only been able to run virtual open events this year.

“Nothing beats coming to campus so students can see what it’s really like here, and experience the facilities for themselves.

“The feedback we have already received from students who took part has been very positive. We will be running a full calendar of on-site open events in the new academic year where everyone can come and experience our campus.”
