New mum Freya means business after switching courses

A Telford mum has a human resources career in her sights after returning to college to complete her business studies.

Freya Joyce initially enrolled at Telford College to study childcare, but realised after her first year that it wasn’t for her.

The former Abraham Darby student switched to a business course instead – and hasn’t looked back.

Business and CIPD lecturer Gavin Real said: “Freya was a level two student with us when she became pregnant and celebrated the birth of her lovely daughter Rosie.

“She had fully completed the level two course before leaving for maternity through hard work and perseverance, and has now returned to enrol on our adult level three CIPD programme.

“She is focusing on starting a career in HR next year, once her little one begins nursery.”

Freya is full of praise for the support she has received from the Telford College team during her studies so far.

“I would definitely recommend the route of college as it allows you to be independent whilst achieving your qualifications, gaining friends and allowing you to become a better version of yourself.

“My tutor, Gavin, gave me confidence to join the course and was very understanding. If I was unsure of something, he would explain it to me more clearly and made sure that I was on the right path.

“He also helped me throughout my pregnancy whilst at college and made me feel comfortable – I knew I could speak to him about it. He made sure all my needs, both as a student and as a mother, were met.”

Freya added: “I would like to gain a stable job and career as a result of my qualifications from Telford College to provide for my daughter and myself and live a comfortable life, making sure I can give my daughter everything she needs.”
