Public services students graduate with distinctions

Telford College students have their sights set on careers in the police force after graduating from Telford College’s public uniformed services course with multiple distinctions.

Lily France and Nila Skitt from Wellington, and Jayden Wilkins of Dawley, are all former pupils of Telford Langley School.

All three are celebrating after each receiving two distinction stars, and a distinction, from their Telford College studies.

Jayden, 18, is now hoping to become an apprentice constable, with West Midlands Police.

“I enjoyed being at the college, as I made some new friends. It was a friendly place with really supportive teachers who helped me to push myself,” he said.

Lily, 18, won an ‘outstanding achiever’ award at Telford College’s 2021 awards evening.

She is also hoping to make the move into an apprenticeship with West Midlands police – or, failing that, pursue a career with the RAF.

She said: “Public uniformed service is what I have always wanted to do, but the course helped me to find out if it would be a suitable career for me.

“Telford College has helped to give me a greater understanding of public uniformed services.

“The staff were really helpful and supportive, and I found I could do more than I thought I could.

“Winning the award has really boosted my confidence, and also proved to me that I can be successful if I put my mind to it.”

Nila, 17, says her next step will either be a police apprenticeship, or a role in the prison service.

She said: “The college was a great place to learn about the uniformed services before applying – making sure it is what I want to do in the future.

“It has a friendly welcoming atmosphere, with helpful staff and more freedom that I would have had in school. The teachers are really supportive and push you to do your very best.”

There are still a few places available on the new public uniformed services courses at Telford College starting in September, which are targeted specifically at those looking for a career in the police, fire service, or armed forces.
