Telford College students became camera operators for the launch night of a well-anticipated musical broadcast in Shrewsbury.

Four second-year creative media students filmed the Salopian Mixtape event at Albert’s Shed, covering four musical acts in the county.

Salopian Mixtape, a new weekly music podcast on Shropshire Live, was founded by Michaela Wylde and Simon Berry, two music enthusiasts who have extensive experience across the musical and broadcasting industry.

The event saw Shropshire-based acts such as Dan Owen, Adele & Andy, Chasing August and Missink take to the stage, with students on hand to record all the performances.

Students Dan Anderson, Joe Turner, Erinn Pope and Liam Holland-Topham delivered a superb multi-camera setup, supported by director of vocational studies Andrew Turner and media facilitator Craig Hartwell. They then created videos for the podcast to use to an extremely professional standard. Take a look at their highlights.

Andrew Turner said: “The Salopian Mixtape is a fantastic podcast and project; it gives musicians in Shropshire

the opportunity to get their music heard by a wider audience and they do so much to support the grassroots music venues in the region.

“We’ve worked with Simon and Michaela from the Salopian Mixtape on lots of projects over the last few years. They have been amazing in creating opportunities for our students to support on live events, podcast creation and in live radio.

“They are so passionate about grassroots music and young people and it’s a real privilege to work with them. They were on the panel for our recent music industry day at the college and provided incredible insight into careers in music for our students.

“I was so proud of the students for their professionalism and creativity in filming the live music performances. They all really enjoyed the opportunity and grew in confidence as the evening went on.

“Some of them are hoping to set up their own content creation businesses and others are going to university next year, so this was a great chance to grow their portfolio and work experience.

“We’ve got a few projects and ideas in the pipeline for the future so watch this space!”

On the night, Salopian Mixtape said: “Special thanks must go to Telford College staff and students who filmed the event and will be producing videos of each of the artists. The students were so professional throughout the event, and it looks like they got some amazing footage – we can’t wait to see it!”
